How To Care For Fine Hair

Want to find out if you have fine hair? Simply take a single hair strand and compare it to a piece of sewing thread. If the hair strand is thinner than the tread, this means your hair strand is small in diameter, which signifies fine hair. While fine hair can be relatively easier to style and smooth to the touch, fine hair is prone to greasiness and may look dull. As such, in order to achieve shiny hair that’s not oily and appears healthy, you have to include a good hair care routine that’s specifically targeted for fine hair. In this post, we have provided some tips and tricks to keep your hair healthy and happy.

Skip Oil-Based Hair Care Products

Since fine hair is already oilier in nature compared to other hair types, you don’t need to add more oil to your hair care regimen. Some hair care products like conditioning creams, styling creams, and hair oils can contain high amounts of oil that do more harm than good for fine hair. These oils can weigh down your hair, enhancing the appearance of flat and greasy hair that’s unappealing. However, that does not mean you no longer have to moisturize your hair. Despite the oils present, you still have to use serums and creams to keep the hair hydrated. The Simply Stylin’ Silk Serum is a good option as it does not contain sulfate and is non-greasy.

Don’t Pile on the Hair Care Products

You know what they say: Less is more. And this cannot be more true when it comes to hair care. Fine hair tends to look flat, so incorporating all those sprays and creams will only weigh the hair down further. If there’s a need to use certain products like heat protectant sprays and dry shampoos, what we recommend is to use them sparingly. Start off by pouring out a pea-size amount of the product and apply to your hair. Gradually add more if necessary. This allows you to check how much product you’re using and to avoid over-usage.

Avoid Using Heat Tools

This not only applies to fine hair but every hair type as well. However, as fine hair is thin, it is more prone to breakage due to its weaker nature. Therefore, hairstylists have always recommended staying away from heat-styling tools as much as possible. Exposure to heat can severely dry out our hair, causing brittle split ends and preventing hair growth. While applying a heat protectant can minimize the damage, consistent heat exposure is nevertheless harmful to the hair’s health.

Get a Trim

Once every six to eight weeks, you can consider heading to the hairdressers and getting a trim. This is because split ends and breakage can look especially noticeable on fine hair due to the thin strands. Since fine hair is also weaker, it is unable to take as much damage as compared to medium and coarse hair. If you find that your fine hair feels heavy on the scalp, getting a trim can help to alleviate the discomfort. On this note, it’s also recommended to keep your hair length on the shorter side.
